10 Ways to Eat Pray Love On A Budget
Posted on August 31st, 2010 in Advice
Stressed out and can’t afford a plane ticket to Italy? … a little extravagant for me too! When I want to unclutter my brain or recover from an exceptionally difficult day I try one of these more “cost effective” ways to rediscover myself.
- Visit a winery – If the lush greenery and grapes of Tuscany are calling your name, check out a winery in your area with endless rows of juicy grapes hanging on the vines. God’s country.
- Wish Upon A Star – On a clear summer night, lie on a blanket and check out the stars twinkling in the sky.
- Buy yourself some flowers – Colourful fresh cut flowers brighten up any day for me.
- Watch your favourite romantic movie – Put on your comfy old pj’s, cuddle up in your favourite fuzzy blanket and let the love story begin.
- Savour a hot cup of tea – I’ve discovered tea leaves so making tea has become a whole new experience for me. I can feel the stress leaving my body as I slowly sip a hot steaming cup of tea.
- Visit the library – Get lost in time poking around the library. There’s something calming about tiptoeing through the stacks of books and people whispering in hushed tones.
- Make your favourite food – I made thick juicy hamburg patties that we grilled and ate on fresh crusty buns with carmelized onions followed by hot out of the oven blueberry pie I’d baked from berries picked on the farm that day. It’s ok to kiss your diet goodbye once in awhile!
- Listen to your favourite CD – Music makes me happy. It’s a part of every occasion for us.
- Visit a green house – Winter is long and cold here in Ontario. We’ve visited a couple of warm cozy green houses to scare away the winter blues.
- Grab a coffee at a café by yourself – I used to hate sitting alone at a coffee shop but now I relish the time to myself. I daydream, people watch and have even started buying my CD’s at Starbuck’s!
You don’t have to ‘break the bank’ when you wish the world would slow down. What do you do to reconnect? Add your ideas to the list.

Thanks! I’ll be giving up the sandals soon for “real” shoes with the cooler weather coming so I’ll need some advice on shoes to wear with jeans.

A manicure always does it for me! Love the pampering aspect, without the cost of a massage
.
Nice to find you on BF.

I love manicures too…have you tried the hot parrafin wax treatment for your hands? It’s amazing and makes your hands so soft! BlogFrog is great isn’t it? It’s my first community type blogging experience and I love it!

Those are great ideas! If I need a few minutes of sanity to slow down and relax, I will load my kids up in the stroller with cups of raisins and nuts for them and take a walk, listening to my music while they snack and talk to each other in the double stroller. And my favorite treat is getting a mani/pedi when I can find a babysitter

Hi Emily, spending quiet time like that with your kids is awesome! And I love pedicures too…sometimes I even indulge in a massage.

I too love getting a cup of coffee at Starbucks by myself. My favorite time to go is around 8am and then I get to sit outside at my starbucks and feel the morning sun on my face while I enjoy my favorite espresso drink

Hi Carrie, I go around that time too! I’ve been sitting outside since we’ve had such a nice summer in Ontario but come the winter…inside it is!

10 Things I Have Done Over the Years to Rediscover Myself (on a budget)
1. Head to the Water – this is my first line of defense when I need to get away and reconnect with myself. There is something about looking at water or hearing water. It has a very calming effect on me. Living by Lake Ontario I often go to a little parkette along the lake and look out at the vastness of the water and I feel a sense of peace. I bring my journal and dialogue with myself. I sort out my thoughts and feelings. Seeing the expansiveness of this body of water makes me realize how small my problems are and I put them in the proper perspective.
2. Meditate – of course by the water or at a special place in your home. For me it is my bedroom, which I love to be in. I sit in my chair by the window looking out at a tree. I can be quiet there.
3. Go for a Drive – anywhere.
4. Put on a Good Old Movie – especially if it is a tear jerker and you can cry along with the characters.
5. Go to your Favourite Place – which for me is Niagara-on-the-Lake. I feel like I have come home there. I often spend the day at the park with Donnie and I’ll read my book while he reads the paper, we play cribbage and have a picnic lunch. We might go for a walk in town and visit some of the shops or walk across the street to the church cemetery and water the flowers on my family’s gravesite. Quite often we put a blanket down under a big old chestnut tree and have an afternoon nap – the best!
6. Read, Read & Read – I think I have read all the self-help books out there. But I wanted a different life so I listened to those who have gone before me; who lit the path I wanted to take.
7. Honour my Quirkiness – I have learned that there are many things I am interested in: photography, writing, visiting tea houses, scrapbooking, preserving (which I will be doing this weekend) and being in nature. One by one I tried my hand at each activity and they all bring me great joy.
8. Get Uplifted – Attend a church service or spiritual retreat.
9. Get Support – Through the years I had a tendency to isolate myself but I have found such encouragement among friends and in support groups.
10. Write out Goals – I am a list person, not only because I can be forgetful at times, but something happens when you intentionally write out goals for your life. It is like writing a wish list to the universe. I reflect on what has been meaningful in my life and what I would like to bring forward. It works! I have even completed a discovery journal where I have cut out pictures and empowering words from various magazines and pasted them into a book. I look through the pages and focus on the images.
